Stronger teeth don’t just mean good oral hygiene – it’s one of the features of a strong willed character, an impressive personality and a disciplined life.
The question is – how do you get them strong?
With a busy life, we often forget to pay attention to one of the most important things that age with time – our teeth.
A few simple lifestyle changes though could do the trick, helping you have the teeth you’ll love. Here is how:
- Rule #1: Cut down on sugar and starch.
Starch eventually breaks down into sugar.
Sugar is what the bacteria in your mouth requires to grow and multiply, and can have a severe effect on your tooth enamel.
It’s a good idea to avoid carbonated drinks and candies. The bacteria can utilize them to create acids
which would weaken the enamel. Sugary foods that sticks on your teeth are more dangerous because
they are more difficult to remove.
If it’s scorching summer, you might well settle in for some chilled mineral water to quench your thirst next time.
- Rule #2: Make the diet plan enamel friendly
Dairy products like milk and cheese contain calcium. This calcium would fight those acids being created by the bacteria.
Calcium strengthens the enamel by protecting it. If you have a problem with lactose, then opt for vegetables that are rich in calcium. Low-fat items would also help you ensure a healthy diet.
- Rule #3: Go easy while brushing:
Do not brush vigorously. While brushing, we often tend to over brush. This might weaken the enamel and cause our gums to recede. Use a soft bristle brush and when you brush, move it gently using short strokes. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums.
- Rule #4: Take time to brush if you have had sugary food.
When you are brushing your teeth, brush for at least 2 minutes and
brush 2 to 3 times a day.
- Rule #5: Make sure your toothpaste has fluoride:
Fluoride not only strengthens the enamel but also fights cavities. It increases the tooth’s resistance power to counter the bacteria. Also make sure you rinse your mouth after brushing with a mouthwash that has fluoride in it.
- Rule #6: Treat your eating disorders:
At times, it is possible for stomach acids to find their way to the mouth. These acids will easily erode the enamel.
If you have a condition like eating disorder bulimia, you need to consult a doctor and get it treated. This is a condition where you vomit after eating and is very dangerous for the enamel’s health.
- Rule #7: Check if you have a dry mouth:
Saliva maintains the balance in the mouth’s ecosystem. It naturally clears debris and doesn’t allow cavities to happen. So take precautions if you have a dry mouth. A sugarless gum or sugarless hard candy might be enough to help the saliva to flow.
- Rule #8: Visit Your Dentist Regularly
A visit once every six months works great and can help your dentist detect any dental problem at an early stage.
